Coffee Tips
Coffee Absorbs Fridge OdoursTake great care when storing your coffee in the fridge. Store well away from foods that can contaminate it. Coffee, especially ground coffee, readily absorbs moisture and the tastes and odours that are dissolved in that moisture. Be very sure to keep it sealed in it's bag - I pop it in a sealed container too. Light and heat evaporate coffee's natural volatile oils and essences so treat it very carefully. |
Grind on DemandCoffee begins losing its taste and "life" very quickly after it is ground and begins to become bitter. In fact some people say that it is substantially degraded within two minutes of grinding! The "rest of us" can relax and take our time. Always return unused beans to the special bag they come in and keep your grinder clean of old grind. If you're buying a grinder, get a good one. Cheap grinders smash the beans, heating them up and damaging the taste. Sunbeam Cafe Series are great home grinders for around $200. Breville has one for about the same price. |
Green Beans are NOT for Consumption!Contrary to the message of a certain current television commercial, green beans are not for direct consumption! Green coffee beans must be roasted which physically and chemically transforms them into the fascinating and delicious brown beans we know and love. Green coffee and green tea are not remotely connected. Green tea has significant health benefits but this is not the same of green coffee beans. Ancient Ethiopians crushed green coffee and mixed it with animal fat as a portable food. We can do much better today! |
